Cycle Academy is an innovative program under the GO!Durban initiative, aimed at promoting cycling as a healthy, sustainable, and safe mode of transport for Durban’s youth and communities. Launched to encourage active mobility and reduce carbon emissions, Cycle Academy offers structured training programs that teach children and young adults essential cycling skills, road safety, and bicycle maintenance. The program operates in various communities across Durban, including Umlazi, KwaMashu, and the CBD, providing access to bicycles, helmets, and safety gear for participants. Cycle Academy collaborates with local schools, community centers, and the eThekwini Municipality to deliver workshops and events that foster a cycling culture, aligning with Durban’s vision to become Africa’s most caring and liveable city by 2030. Beyond physical training, the program emphasizes environmental awareness, encouraging participants to adopt cycling as a daily commuting option to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. As of 2025, Cycle Academy has expanded its reach, introducing advanced programs for competitive cycling and partnering with local organizations to provide scholarships for underprivileged youth. The Learn to Ride Program is designed for beginners aged 6 to 18, teaching the fundamentals of cycling, including balance, pedaling, and steering. Participants receive a bicycle and helmet for the duration of the program.
Our Road Safety Workshops educate participants on traffic rules, safe cycling practices, and how to navigate Durban’s urban environment. These workshops are mandatory for all participants to ensure safe riding.
For advanced cyclists, the Competitive Cycling Track offers training for races and events, with coaching from experienced cyclists. Scholarships are available for talented youth from underprivileged backgrounds.
