With the overall goal to transport and move people easily around the City, GO!Durban introduced its active-mobility programme with an aim to ensure that people can access places and spaces on pedestrian walkways, bridges and cycle lanes, without needing to always rely on motorised transport.
In 2016, the GO!Durban Cycle Academy was launched as part of this active-mobility programme to introduce youth from disadvantaged communities to cycling. Since this launch four bike parks have been established which enable young people to learn to cycle as a sport and recreationally with expert coaching and guidance. These sites are set in rural and peri-rural areas, and come complete with a “pump-track”, ablutions, and indoor classroom facilities. They are administered by the NPO Green Corridors and are managed by sports experts, Peschl Sports in Inanda, KwaMashu, KwaDabeka, and Chesterville. Each park employs two coaches who work with close to 400 learners who attend the Academy after school to cycle and to do homework with a qualified educator in supervision, in a safe and nurturing environment. The Academy ethos, encourages all-round excellence, commitment and enthusiasm, and learners are required to pass each grade to remain within the programme.
Supplementary to the Cycle Academy is the GO!Durban Academy Arts Programme. The objective of the Arts Programme is empowerment, giving youth aged 12 to 19 access to opportunities that will change their lives. Local industry professionals train approximately 100 young people from KwaMashu, KwaDabeka and Inanda in the disciplines of voice, dance and drama, three times per week. One aspect of the vision of the project is to give back and bring upliftment to our local communities through the staging of educational musicals that share powerful messages of road safety and environmental awareness. Since the inception of the project 18 months ago, these talented youngsters have performed at high profile government and business events, as well as professional productions on Durban stages.
