GO!Durban integrates Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to modernize public transportation in eThekwini, focusing on safety, efficiency, and sustainability. ITS in this context includes real-time traffic management, GPS tracking for buses, and smart fare collection systems. As of May 2025, the C3 corridor benefits from real-time bus tracking, allowing commuters to access arrival times via mobile apps, reducing wait times and improving reliability. Traffic signals along key routes are equipped with adaptive control systems that adjust timings based on traffic flow, minimizing congestion in high-traffic areas like the Durban CBD and Pinetown.
Additionally, GO!Durban employs CCTV and sensor-based monitoring to enhance safety at stations and on buses, with automatic incident detection systems alerting authorities to potential issues. The initiative is exploring Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication to enable buses to interact with traffic signals, prioritizing public transport at intersections. Future plans include integrating AI-driven analytics for predictive maintenance of the fleet and expanding smart ticketing systems to support seamless multimodal travel across buses, rail, and cycling routes.
