Road Safety Programme

The eThekwini Road Safety Programme

The eThekwini Road Safety Programme strives for a safer Durban, where motorists and pedestrians alike can travel with the peace of mind that the utmost is being done so that road users, pedestrians and motorists alike, may reach their destinations safely.

The programme adopted is aligned to the Safe System approach which supports Sustainable Developmental Goals and is also aligned with the Habitat III: New Urban Agenda. The system, which is used in many countries, says it’s wrong to accept death or disabling injury as the price we must pay for transport. It works to control roads, vehicles and speed and to limit human error, via traffic engineering, policing and education.
It is hoped that soon commuters will be able to rate their trips in a Moja Cruise taxi as part of the overall offering to ensure that the taxi owner and the driver meet the relevant criteria.

The overarching plan is to implement a safe road system which is increasing free from death or serious injury.
