The brightly coloured mini-bus taxi’s that you have seen in the City is an innovative incentive programme, that was devised through a joint public and private consultation process between the City and the eThekwini Metro Taxi Council (EMTC), the leadership body of the mini-bus taxi industry, to facilitate transformation within the Industry.
This initiative, which has been operational since October 2017 as a “pilot project” includes 500 branded mini-bus taxis that need to offer customer-oriented service for commuters that includes clean, safe and efficient experiences whilst using the taxi. From a safety perspective, all vehicles enrolled in the programme undergo regular roadworthiness checks. Outstanding fines, as well as speeding and overloading is also monitored. All criteria need to be met in order to qualify for a financial incentive given each month to the owner/operator.
It is hoped that soon commuters will be able to rate their trips in a Moja Cruise taxi as part of the overall offering to ensure that the taxi owner and the driver meet the relevant criteria.
The fares for journeys are the same as for taxis not enrolled in the programme.
